  • Spurious "words" recognised.

Hello, new user here. I'm slowly working my way through getting HCS working with Elite, but at the moment I'm finding that VoiceAttack is constantly generating spurious words - see below for one valid command preceded and followed by silence, during which multiple spurious words were "recognised".

Sometimes VA will tack these onto a legitimate command resulting in it not being recognised by HCS, eg I say "deploy hardpoints" and it appears as "than deploy hardpoints". I'm assuming that the solution is to change settings in VoiceAttack's options, but I'd be grateful if someone could steer me, as the description of the various values is not especially informative.

Edit: got a response on Discord. Will try suggested changes and report back here.

Hey there. So I saw your post here and the advice you received on Discord and I would like to add my 2 cents. For an incredibly long period of time (years), I was dealing with "spurious" commands as well. In my case it was words with S, such as "yes" or "fss". I took all the recommended steps to try and eliminate it but it just wouldn't go away. I always assumed it was line noise and tried multiple mics to try and get rid of it. Nothing seemed to work.

Now, I'm going to assume you have your audio playing through speakers of some sort. Mine is through a 7.1 surround sound system, which sounds amazing. I also have a buttkicker mounted under my seat so I can feel all the bass rumbles. The buttkicker was why I was so stubborn. All the "spurious" commands were my mic picking up ambient sound from my sound system. Which I played fairly loud. I finally relented and had the audio play through the built in headphones on my Valve Index and lo and behold, no more "spurious" commands. Voice attack/HCS voice packs only heard a command when I actually spoke one. I then started experimenting with audio mirroring so I could have audio in my headphones and output it through my surround sound system at a much lower volume, so I could still get the bass effects through my buttkicker. It didn't take me long to find a volume on my surround sound system that didn't interfere with voice attack. So I now happily play with no weird behavior (dumping cargo) from voice attack/HCS voice packs and am still able to utilize my buttkicker for added "Immersion".

So long story short (too late) if you're outputting your audio, loudly, through speakers and using voice attack, you're, most likely, going to continue to deal with "spurious" commands popping up and pissing you off. So, either utilize headphones, experiment with your speaker volume until it doesn't interfere with voice attack, or utilize a push-to-talk option. I am 99.9% certain that nothing else will work. Good luck.

Hi, Talon Klaw, thanks for your interest, and the suggestions.

I actually play audio through headphones, with a boom mic attached (HyperX wireless), so it is unlikely to be exactly the same problem as yours.

Ambient noise did occur to me as a problem though. My gaming PC is moderately noisy so it might possibly be that which is being picked up - will continue to experiment.
