  • Weird Issue After Installing Gravity

After having used it for quite a while, I recently bought Gravity for Elite Dangerous. I also downloaded and installed updates for the 3 voice packs I own.
Everything seemed to work fine for several hours in-game - and then suddenly I noticed that the little VA window (where all start-up messages are displayed when the app is launched, which I keep open on a separate monitor) was not updating. Whatever text was there, stayed visible. VA continued to work - commands were acknowledged and performed, responses given, etc - but the window would not update. Even the 'Close' button in the top-right corner of the title-bar was unresponsive. The app appears to have crashed, but it has not.
The weird part is that if I hover my mouse over the window, whatever message happens to appear under my pointer shows up in the little pop-up that always appears when you hover over the window. These messages appear to update as new messages 'appear' at the top of the window - they're just not visible. The VA icon in the notification area on the taskbar is still responsive and appears to work properly - I can close VA, for example. The rest of VA appears to function as it should. Even the buttons to edit profiles and for options still work - I just can't see them; the window area itself is completely black.
I have tried running VA both as an Administrator, with all plugins disabled and switching to other profiles, but this does not help. I have also verified the app files from within Steam. The Ctrl-Shift-Alt-Enter key combination does nothing, but almost everything else about the app still appears to work as it should (except for the aforementioned window, of course).

I've also done a *complete* uninstall / reinstall of VA and all the voice packs but this also did not help. DSIM and SFC report no errors.
This window is important to me as I like to keep watch on what it says about my game and the recognition of my commands.
A VA developer has tried his best to help me, but in the end could suggest only reinstalling Windows. I think that's a bit extreme, and due to the fact that he could not point to anything specific about Windows being at fault, I'm not ready to do that; there's no guarantee that it will solve the problem. Suggestions?

This is strange, as gravity uses the same plugin as the *rest* of the profile. Something is definitely up with *something* on your system, as I am unable to replicate this on my end.

Instead of trying a reinstall, you can try an SFC /scannow from an admin command prompt and see if that fixes any underlying file corruption issues in the *base* window install.

You say that the VA window area is black? Have you enabled (by means in VA) "Dark mode / Cover of darkness" or changed your windows theme colors by 3rd party software (windowblinds for example). In the HCS Customiser section, do you have "dark mode" enabled (its in the main HCS Customiser window)

This is the first time that I have heard of this happening, so I doubt its our plugin, but I will keep an ear open just in case it happens to ther people

From my original post: "DSIM and SFC report no errors."

Yes, I did. Before the issue I had white text on a black background. Now it's effectively black text on a black background. As I tried to explain in my initial post, it looks like VA is still working, only the VA window has the issue of not being able to read the text, and the window not being responsive (cannot move or close using the controls on the title bar). Resizing the window 'smears' the title bar across the window as I make it larger. In addition, the Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Enter key combination does not appear to be recognised at all. The VA icon in the system tray appears to have full functionality.

In working with the developers at VA we have discovered that v189 (x64) runs properly on my machine.

I don't really know what to think; VA ran for several hundred hours on my machine, and then, shortly after installing Gravity - it did not. But even Gravity ran for several hours before I noticed that it had an issue.

Going through Event Viewer for the past several days I see exactly one event for .NET Runtime:

      Application: VoiceAttack.exe

I hope you or someone can make some sense of it.

Your first post was *exceedingly* hard to read (light grey text on light blue background) so I am sorry if I missed anything.

That needs to be reported over to Voice Attack. I cannot see anything *specific* in there that would be referring to our plugin. As I said, the gravity pack uses the *exact same* plugin as the normal packs, so I cannot see how adding Gravity would cause this...

Well, there is how the Profile / Plugin / Sound files are read for the gravity addon, but that is more on how those *particular* parts interact with each other, and it doesn't interact with the VA window / process in the slightest.

As I said, I will keep an ear out on this one, as you are so far (the one and only) person who has reported this issue who uses our voicepacks + plugin.
